Annual Organ Concert with Jay Zoller, Organist

Friday, August 18 at 7 pm

Jay Harold Zoller will be the featured performer at the organ concert on Aug. 18. The free concert, an annual community event, begins at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a refreshment hour.

Zoller, director of music and organist at South Parish Church in Augusta, is retired from the Andover Organ Co. where he built and designed pipe organs. He writes articles and reviews of organ music for the Diapason magazine and, since retirement, has increased his concert activities.  Zoller has played concerts in Germany, including recitals in Berlin, Hamburg and Cologne. In the last year he has played programs in New England, as well as Wyoming and Nebraska. He lives in Newcastle with his wife, Rachel, is a docent at the Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, and also paints.

The Aug. 18 program is weighted toward more contemporary composers, but will include a rarelyheard work by Johann Sebastian Bach, Prelude and Fugue in d minor.  Zoller also will play works by Derek Bourgeois (Serenade, Opus 22),  Joe Utterback (Go Down Moses, Standin’ in the Need of Prayer, Every Time I Feel the Spirit), Carson Cooman (Ceremonial Suite, Opus 1215 and Concertino III), and Thomas Aberg (Fantasy in A minor, I Folkton, Festival Voluntary).  The selection from Bourgeois, a semi-retiredcomposer living in England, is perky and off-beat and one of his most-often played pieces. Utterback, an American composer, specializes in composing and performing in a jazz style. Cooman, who is composer in residence at Harvard University Chapel, Boston, dedicated his Concertina III to Maine organist Kevin Birch, who has given several of Broad Bay’s summer organ concerts.  Works by Aberg, a well-known Swedish organist and composer, are known for their rhythmic joy, simplicity, and humor.

A free-will offering will go to the Broad Bay Congregational UCC building fund.

An opportunity for which the church was born...

The leadership of the United Church of Christ has released a statement from condemning President Donald Trump's decision to abandon the Paris Climate Accords.  (read the full statement here)  Included is a call to congregations and clergy to embrace this moment of opportunity in the following ways:

Accept the mantle of moral leadership
Now the time for clergy to speak from their pulpits about the moral obligation of our generation to protect God’s creation. Let the world know that whatever the current American administration may say or do, the Jesus movement will not back away from God’s call to protect our common home.
Incarnate change
Now is the time for congregations and for every person of faith to set a moral example through our own words and actions. As individuals and as communities, we can commit to making decisions of integrity in our energy choices, and to holding our leaders accountable to do the same.
Proclaim truth in the public square
Now is the time for communities of faith to be bold and courageous in proclaiming truth in the public square. It is now abundantly clear that the Federal Government will not address the greatest moral challenge that the world has ever faced.  It is up to us.

A Rewarding Opportunity -

If You Like to Drive!

Lincoln County FISH (Friends in Service Helping) is a volunteer driving service for residents of Lincoln County. All rides are free, with drivers donating their time, vehicle and gas. The destinations (both distance and purpose) are only limited by drivers’ willingness. Once a request is received (LC FISH phone is 350-9808), all the drivers are notified by a group email. Drivers do not have a quota in any given time period and each driver determines his or her availability. Given the demographics and geography of our area, there is a huge need and our requests are growing monthly. (We did 98 rides in September and 138 in October.)

So, we are always looking for more drivers. If this ministry speaks to you, please call or email Edie Vaughan – 677-6085, evaughan@tidewater.net for more information.

And of course, we hope you’ll spread the word to anyone who might need a ride.

Twenty-first Century Ministry: Nineteenth Century Building

Amazing News! The Broad Bay Church has gained national recognition and was awarded a place in the 2016-17 cohort of the National Fund for Sacred Places. This is the official press release from Sacred Places.

Historic Maine Church Selected for National Grant-Making Program

Waldoboro, Maine (November 4, 2016) — The historic Broad Bay Congregational United Church of Christ in downtown Waldoboro has been selected to participate in a national grant-making program. The church will receive a planning grant and in-kind professional services leading to the opportunity to access up to $250,000 in capital grants for its church building, which dates back to 1838.

The award comes as part of an unprecedented $14 million National Fund for Sacred Places announced by Partners for Sacred Places and the National Trust for Historic Preservation to assist aging churches in need of repair and restoration. The Fund will provide up to $250,000 in capital grants, in addition to planning grants and an array of services, for at least 50 individual congregations from a diversity of faiths over four years.

“We have some real issues that we need to address involving the structural integrity of the building, including part of the foundation and the steeple,” says Reverend Nancy Duncan, who explains that the church’s steeple is an important part of the area’s skyline. “And our building is also used for a local restorative justice program as well as the historical society and other members of our community. We need to address access issues such as ADA. Old churches like this were built for people who could climb stairs.”

Broad Bay was selected by the Fund due to its clear dedication to being a community resource for the people of Waldoboro. Restoring the historic building is seen as an opportunity to deepen the positive impact of the congregation on local residents.

“We are really excited to work with Broad Bay. They have sincerely sought community buy-in and see their building truly as a resource for the town. This is exactly the kind of congregation we seek to highlight with resources from the Fund,” says Chad Martin, Director of the National Fund.

The National Fund for Sacred Places is a collaboration that builds on Partners for Sacred Places’ decades of work helping churches use best stewardship practices with their historic facilities in order to strengthen, serve and celebrate their communities for the common good. The National Trust for Historic Preservation is the nation’s leading preservation organization with 60 years of advocacy and grant-making to preserve America’s diverse history.

The Fund was launched with two grants totaling nearly $14 million from the Indiana-based Lilly Endowment Inc. Through this initiative, $10 million will be disbursed for capital improvements, with the remainder used for planning, technical assistance, coaching and program oversight.

More information, including contact information and high-resolution images, is available from Chad Martin, Director of the National Fund. Details about the application process, eligibility requirements and selection criteria are available by visiting www.fundforsacredplaces.org. Applications are now being accepted for the next round of grants, which will be awarded in the fall of 2017.

Spring is coming and Plant Sale Leaders Wanted--An Invitation from Maryann

Seeking Plant Sale Leader/Co-Leaders— Carol Hakkila organized and tended the plant sale for many, many years.  I stepped in for two and found it to be too much with my return to full-time work.  I would be happy to “coach” a person or people in the steps they’d need to take for this year’s plant sale, which is traditionally held Memorial Day weekend (but could be later).  There are growers ready to start plants, as well as dig plants come spring, if we can find a leader(s).  And, the plant sale doesn’t have to be “like it was” — it could be as big or small as people want to make it.  What is most important is that you have a strong interest in plants, are good at organizing and juggling, and can devote the necessary time in May.  If interested, feel free to talk with me at church, call me, or e-mail me. -- Maryann Guernsey

Lent 2016

Welcome: An Invitation

Each Monday, some of our members gather in a group that is loosely called “Scripture and Art” or “Art and Spirituality;” we read the scripture for the coming Sunday and use art, prayer and conversation to reflect on the reading. During Lent, you can join us from the comfort of your living room, kitchen, or bedside with these Lent Coloring Pages.

Adult coloring books are becoming widely used as a spiritual practice—a way to quiet the mind. This series of nine coloring pages create a path moving from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday.

Click here to download the pdf Lent Coloring Pages

Read the scripture referenced at the bottom each page; pull out some colored pencils, markers, or paint; reflect and pray (with or without words). Each drawing has a word related to the reading.  You may discover your own word or phrase when you reflect on the reading. If so, write it down. Draw it into the picture. Add prayer concerns if you choose. This is your spiritual practice. Use it any way that feels right to you.

Our Church: Our Dream

On Sunday, February 14, we will again worship close together around tables in the fellowship hall.  The soup will be on, bread will be shared, and the heat will be on. Carroll and Cathy will make music.  Nancy Duncan will reflect on the words of Jesus as written in the gospel of Mark 10:17-31: eternal life, camels going through eyes of needles, but mostly the call to "Give."

As part of the service we will watch this video.

We will have time to dream about our ministry and our building as a platform for ministry. What would you love our ministry to be able to be/do?  What should we fix/change about the building?

Hope to see you Sunday.  But if you aren't here, we still want to know what you think.  Let us know.
